3M Scotchgard Water Repellence Techniques

L’arc en cuir is a Taiwanese authorized user of 3M™ Scotchgard™, specializing in professional water, and stain repellence techniques and testing.

3M™ Scotchgard™Water Repellence Techniques—L’arc en cuir adds 3M™ Scotchgard™ water repellent agent in the leather tanning and dying processes; after the final processes, the leather is sent to the lab to undergo tests required by 3M. Each type of leather must pass the tests to ensure its quality before being shipped to clients. L’arc en cuir also provides 3M™ Scotchgard™ certified badges to help clients enhance their brand identity.
The waterproof tests include:
  • The 3M water repellency test, one of the tests required by 3M™ Scotchgard™, in which water is poured on the leather from above and the extent of water droplets hanging onto the leather is evaluated. A score is given based on AATCC* standards.
  • Note: The American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorist (AATCC) is a non-international organization that assesses color fastness and physical properties of fabrics.
Oil drop /water drop tests, aqueous solution and oil assigned by 3M are used; a volumetric pipet is then used to drop the solution/oil onto the leather; the water/oil repellency of the leather is determined based on the drop of solution/oil onto the leather.
—-> The tests mentioned above are tests required by 3M™ Scotchgard™.
  • Water resistance in flexed condition: to test whether the leather is water resistant by simulating the flexed condition when walking. The international standard of 15,000 times is used; it is a test done by many international brands.

We have changed to 3M Scotchgard water repellent without fluorine since February 2021. Without fluorine, the protector is ecofriendly and avoids the production of environmental hormone. However, please note that water repellent without fluorine is not grease resistant.
